that gets done by hand and gets done wrong — here it is exact, and the maths is verified against known cases below.

Verification — the conversion tested against known cases
Vertical holes. When a hole is within a few degrees of vertical the bottom-of-hole reference line is
undefined, and α/β cannot be converted without an independently oriented reference mark. The app refuses to
convert rather than returning a confident wrong answer.
